Holmedale B&B, Askrigg

Taxi Askrigg North Yorkshire

Situated at the gateway to both the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, the Moorcock Inn is an ideal place to stay whether you are seeking a relaxing retreat or a walking holiday. A short drive into Wensleydale will take you to Hawes, an old market town where a walk down the cobbled streets will lead you to the local shops or up to the Wensleydale Creamery, home to the famous cheeses. The rope makers and the Dales Countryside museum are also worth a visit as is the local market which takes place every Tuesday.

For train enthusiasts, the Dandry Mire/Moorcock Viaduct is visible from the Moorcock and only a short walk away. This is part of the commercial Settle to Carlisle line and includes regular steam hauled services. With it's 12 arches it stands 50 ft high, 227 yards long and is a spectacular sight.

Another few miles will take you down to Aysgarth Falls which are a must see for anyone new to the area.

Bolton Castle is an impressive sight particularly at night when it is lit up and can be seen from miles around and by day it is an interesting place to visit as the sight where Mary Queen of Scots was once held prisoner.

The village of Askrigg can be of particular interest to any James Herriot fans as the setting for All Creatures Great and Small, as can Hardraw Force as the setting for the famous waterfall scene from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

Heading back up into Cumbria, Kendal home of the famous mintcake, is well worth a visit, as is Pendragon Castle, once owned by King Arthur. Driving over the infamous coal road from Garsdale Station takes you to Dent, a beautiful small town which gives the feeling of stepping back in time and a trip on the historic Settle to Carlisle railway is something that certainly should be experienced

For those travelling to us by train and arriving at Garsdale station we can now happily advertise some handy local transport. The Little Red Bus is a great way to get from the station to the Moorcock, it's always waiting at the station when trains are due to arrive and it is not costly. It is also possible to call the bus for trips into Hawes and beyond and the driver will simply tell you where he is, if he can make it and how long it will be!!! There is also now a taxi service running from the B&B next door which can take up to 8 passengers at a time and is similarly run on either a booking basis or if the owners are free at the time. Telephone numbers for both these services can be obtained from the staff at the Moorcock.
